One of the most common questions in a Kundali reading isn't just "what does my chart say?" but "why is this happening now?" The answer often lies in your dasha — the planetary period system that's central to Vedic astrology's approach to timing.
Your birth chart is a snapshot of planetary positions at the moment you were born — but those planets don't all "activate" at once throughout your life. The dasha system divides your life into a sequence of periods, each ruled by a different planet, based on the Moon's position (Nakshatra) at birth. The most widely used system, Vimshottari Dasha, spans a total cycle of 120 years across all nine planets.
Each planet's major period (Mahadasha) can last anywhere from 6 to 20 years, depending on the planet. Within each major period, there are sub-periods (Antardasha) ruled by other planets — so even within a single Mahadasha, you'll experience different "flavours" as the sub-periods shift. This is why someone might say "the first two years of my current period were difficult, but it's improved since" — that's often the sub-period changing.
This is one of the most practically useful things to understand: a planet's position in your chart shows its potential, but the dasha shows when that potential is most active. A strong, well-placed planet that governs your current period can bring its positive qualities to the forefront of your life right now — while a challenging placement might be "quiet" if its period hasn't arrived yet, or vice versa.
This is why a reading that only looks at placements without discussing dasha timing gives an incomplete picture — and why "what period am I in, and what's coming next?" is often one of the most valuable questions a consultation can answer.
It's tempting to label dasha periods as simply good or bad, but the reality is more nuanced. A period ruled by a planet associated with discipline, for example, might bring hard work and structure rather than ease — which can feel challenging in the moment but lead to long-term stability. Part of an honest reading is explaining what a period actually tends to bring, rather than reducing it to a label that causes unnecessary worry or false reassurance.
If you've ever wondered "why does this keep happening" or "when will this phase end," a dasha-focused discussion is often the most direct way to get a meaningful answer — and it only requires your accurate birth date, time, and place to calculate.
